Renting doesn't mean living with builder-beige and a single ceiling light. The trick is choosing upgrades that change a lot on the surface and nothing underneath, so you can take them with you when you leave.

Rule one: document everything

Before you change anything, walk through with your phone and take date-stamped photos of every wall, fixture and floor. At move-out, those photos are your evidence. Keep the original hardware from any swap (shower heads, pulls, bulbs) in a labelled bag.

Walls: colour without paint

Peel-and-stick wallpaper makes an accent wall behind a bed or sofa in an afternoon. In the kitchen, peel-and-stick backsplash tile covers a dated backsplash without grout. Both work best on smooth, fully cured paint. Always test a small piece in a hidden spot, and remove it slowly at a low angle.

Hanging things without holes

Command hooks and strips handle art, mirrors, keys and cords. Follow the weight rating, press firmly for 30 seconds, and wait an hour before loading them. To remove, pull the tab straight down, never outward.

Comfort: sleep, drafts and security
